Overhead Luggage Room

I sat with my knees under my chin, my carry on bag (backpack) at my feet all the way from Chicago to L.A. Why? Because the overhead lockers were full with other people's carry on baggage, which ranged from boxes to suitcases and even a fold up stroller. Many passengers carried on more than one piece.
Incredible!? This is the way all budget airlines are heading when they charge for baggage to be checked and loaded in the carriage.

It also worries me that all this carry-on baggage isn't weighed properly - surely it presents a greater risk to not know the proper weight of the aircraft before take off?
I've avoided budget deals ever since and always check my bag now. I limit my own carry on to a hand bag size and avoid the knees up I experienced on Chicago to LA.

Would love to hear other's opinions on this.
